Arlyn’s Tips: How to style kitchen shelves

I did a refresh on my kitchen shelves. I have no upper cabinets so I like them to be practical and intentional as much as beautiful. Open Shelving can feel overwhelming, I shared some easy steps to help you tackle the space in your own home.

1.Clean Slate

Start with a clean slate. Take everything down and clean the dust from the shelves and décor. This will give you a fresh start for some great inspiration.

2. Color Scheme

Pick a color scheme that works well together. This will allow you to choose items with more intention.

3. Use items you currently have

Look around your house to see if you have any décor you are not currently using or if you want to switch things around from an area. Gather all the décor for easy access.

4. Background items

Start with the background of the shelves. You can add art pieces, cutting boards, clocks, and any large skinny items that will serve for a background.

5. Add items you use on the regular

I like to add things I need to use regularly. Such add bowls, plates, glass cups, pitchers, and spoons measuring cups. This is easy access to get a hold of the items and they add dimension. This helps you to add different shapes to the shelves.

6. Books

Add books to add height and it’s a great design element. They can be cookbooks, vintage books or any type of kitchen type book. You can stand them up stack them or display them horizontally. I like to add something on top of the book(s) to add height.

7. Plants

Plants are a great way to add an organic feel, color, and life. They can be real or a faux plant. Tip: The higher shelves where they are harder to get to add a plant that doesn’t take much water or add a faux plant.

8. Vintage pieces

Vintage pieces are a great way to fill in the gaps. You can add them on top of books, in front of art or add them in large holes. Great vintage pieces are candlesticks, copper items or corbels.

9. Add items you love

Choose items with intention. Are they practical? Do they serve a purpose? Are they your style? Choosing items you absolutely love allows you to love the space more and are able to keep the pieces for years to come.

10. Do YOU!

Don’t sweat it too much with the steps. Always remember to do you. Get creative and add your personal taste.

Note: If the upper shelves are too high for your reach, add decor or pretty dishes you don’t use on the regular.

I hope these tips help you to achieve the look you are hoping for. If you need any extra help feel free to reach out. I’m here to inspire.
